Need help understanding the difference?
NPC
Company structure

Non-Profit Company

The organisation is registered as a company and operates according to its stated non-profit objectives.

  • Requires at least three directors
  • Has formal company registration documents
  • Must use its resources to advance its purpose
  • Does not distribute profits privately
NPO
Separate registration

Non-Profit Organisation

NPO registration is handled separately and does not happen automatically when an NPC is registered.

  • May be applied for after the organisation is established
  • Has its own requirements and reporting responsibilities
  • May support certain funding or compliance needs
  • Requires a separate application process
Is an NPC suitable?

Designed for organisations advancing a defined purpose.

The organisation should exist to serve its stated objectives rather than to distribute profits to its directors or members.

Common NPC uses

Community, public-interest and purpose-led organisations.

The correct structure depends on how the organisation will operate, who will govern it and what it intends to achieve.

NPC questions

Before or after you apply.

These answers cover common questions about NPC registration and the Mavosa application process.

Ask Mavosa another question
Why does an NPC require three directors?

The Mavosa NPC form requires information for at least three directors before the application can be submitted.

Are three directors included in the R950 package?

Yes. The standard package includes three directors. Additional directors are charged at R100 each.

Does NPC registration include NPO registration?

No. NPC registration and NPO registration are separate processes. Registering an NPC does not automatically register the organisation as an NPO.

Can an NPC earn income?

An NPC may generate income, but its income and resources should be used to advance the organisation’s stated purpose rather than distributed privately.

What happens after the form is submitted?

You receive a submission confirmation and reference. Mavosa reviews the information and contacts you about payment, corrections or the next step.

What if a Private Company is more appropriate?

A Private Company is generally intended for a business operating for profit. Review the Private Company page or contact Mavosa before applying.
